Another great Messy Church tonight. Big thanks to all who came and to the fantastic helpers! On the menu tonight was bangers, beans and mash, followed by the serious business of making "thank-you" crosses, personalised prayer cards (inspired by some lights not too dis-similar to the one above...), stained glass window pictures, and last but by no means least, a treasure trail in darkness, with only a head torch to light the way (oh, and a chocolatey treasure at the end..).

We thought about Jesus's words - "I am the light of the world, if you follow me you won't be in darkness" - and how we can follow Jesus in many different ways every day.

A bit of singing and dancing rounded off the night. Keep your eyes peeled for the date of the next event, hope to see you there!

Remembrance Day

Once again the Sunday Squad created a fantastic frieze for Remembrance Day. We re-used the wonderful large poppies that were made last year, each bearing the names of the countries where soldiers have lost their lives in conflicts since World War I. Everyone lit a candle in memory of those who died, and thought about the conflicts that have gone previously and continue across the world today.

Well, unless you've been hiding under a rock recently, you will know that St Peter's is organising a fantastic concert in January - Fischy Music will be playing at the Volunteer Hall, Galashiels. This is a fantastic opportunity to see Fishy Music play live. Fischy Music write and perform top quality music full of hope and humour. They are loved by kids of all ages across the country. Come and experience them live in Galashiels in Jan.

Messy Church - 26th October

Since it was Halloween this month, the theme for October's messy church was All-Hallows-Eve. After a tasty supper the children enjoyed a range of activities relating to All Saints Day including making their own "saint-in-training" badges, creating a fabulous string of saintly bunting (decorated with their own personal heros) and making super-sparkly lanterns. A bit of tasty fun was had dooking for apples and playing the hula-hoop game - the aim was to eat as many hula-hoops from the string as possible without using hands!

Everyone had a great time. Thanks to all who helped out with the activities, and preparing the food. We couldn't have done it without you. Looking forward to seeing you all next month. Keep your eye's peeled for the date, and tell your friends - the more the merrier!

This week the children of the Sunday Squad had fun making christian crispies, and once again the prevailing theme was.... you guessed it, chocolate! Some brilliant crispie shapes were made including crosses, doves and a few more obscure shapes (..rocks?). Whatever the shape they were quickly devoured.

Today the Sunday Squad kids discussed honesty. Honestly... what would you do if you found a pound on the ground? And if it was £50? We thought about the importance of honesty in all aspects of our lives, no matter how small. The children made this great poster...

Long Time No Blog!

Well, it has been a truly ridiculous amount of time since the last blog update... there are no excuses for this, just me being generally rubbish!

The sad bit is that you've missed so much! We had all the Christmas celebrations, some very successful soup & puds, amazing concerts, the visitation of the whole congregation, all the Easter celebrations and the busiest Messy Church for years! Perhaps, there in lies the problem? There has been so much happening in the life of St Peter's over the last few months that blogging has seemed pretty far down my list of priorities. I think the time may have come for a wee rethink of who the regular bloggers could be so that this doesn't happen again!!!

The busyness is good though, and I think a sign of a healthy church family life. Today we had a 'Souper Lunch' in aid of Christian Aid where over £150 was raised. Many thanks to Karen and her helpers who provided a delicious lunch, and thanks to everyone for coming along to support the event.

Coming up this month;

Wed 14th April 7.30pm in the Church Hall ~ a chance to have a debrief following last weeks Messy Church and a time to plan for the first of our regular Messy Church Events (Starting Tues 27th April 5.30 - 7pm)

Sat 17th April 2-4pm ~ Daffodil teas, car boots and stalls.

Tues 20th April 7pm in the Church Hall~ Messy Church Training. A chance for folk from our congregation plus others from the diocese to come to find out a bit more about how to do a good Messy Church afternoon from Rueben Addis the Scottish Rep.

Remembrance Sunday

The children of the Sunday Squad created this wonderful frieze for Remembrance Sunday. Each of the large poppies had the names of all the countries where British soldiers had lost their lives since World War I. This highlighted to the children all the conflicts in the world, some of which happened a long time ago and others which are happening now. The children then each lit a candle in memory of those who had died and invited the congregation to follow their lead at the main service. Their hard work has created a very memorable piece of art work.. thank you to the Sunday Squad!

We are very much looking forward to welcoming back Richard Common and his students to St Peter's after last year's excellent concert.

Richard is a local accordion player who, along with his students, will play a wide ranging programme for us on Friday 20th November 2009 @ 7.30pm.
Tickets are £5 which are available on the door, a glass of wine is included in the ticket price.

Just a wee reminder that the Church Sale will be held on Saturday 21st November in the Volunteer Hall, 10 ~12noon.
This is one of our 2 big fundraising sales in the year so we need lots of helpers on the day and even more stuff to sell. So , if you have anything you wish to donate ( books, toys, games, crafts, bric a brac, raffle prizes, cake and candy, etc) then please bring them on the day, the hall is open from 8.30am. Alternatively you can leave things at the back of church at any time and we will do the transporting for you!
Please take a poster from the back of Church and put in your local shop, library, etc, and remember to tell and your friends!! Look forward to seeing you there....

Back to Church Sunday and Family Day was a great day for everyone. The Sunday Squad children took part in the service, creating a lovely banner of plenty - based on 37 different fruits. Following the service the harverst offerings were auctioned in a particularly fruitful fundraiser for the Play Pumps charity. The local produce and home made goodies made a fantastic £190+ for Play Pumps - well done everyone. Afterwards there was lots of fun for the kids, including the bouncy castle, accompanied by Peter on the bagpipes - thank-you Peter, the kids loved it! We rounded off with a game of beat-the-goalie footie, and then a bit of calm-down time with play-doh. We all had a lovely day.

Back to Church Sunday and Harvest Celebrations and Church Family Day! So not a lot on then! We will be celebrating Harvest with everyone who has been invited back to church by a friend. Then we'll have a bring and share lunch followed by an African style auction of homegrown/produced produce! All funds will go the church so please bring jam, marrows, cakes, carrots, potatoes, plums, apples, etc.. and some cash to take part in the auction. We will then have lots of fun with games, bouncy castle, water pistol fights, etc.... I have been advised that children should bring a change of clothes!!

Chariot Wheels

Today the Sunday Squad baked delicious Chariot Wheel biscuits. Many hands made light work rolling out the biscuit dough, and carefully cutting out the rounds. As the biscuits were baking, we listened to the story of the parting of the red sea, whilst enjoying the delicious smells wafting from the oven. Toast took second place today!

The Way Ahead?

The vestry have met several times lately to talk about the future of St Peter's. We are approximately £200 short every month of what we need to maintain a full time stipendiary priest. With very little reserves in the bank it has become obvious that we need to start thinking about all the alternatives.
Members of the vestry are taking it in turns to lead a time of prayer about this specific issue each Sunday after the 10.30 service. This time of prayer is open to everyone and we hope will provide some answers as to the way forward for our church. The vestry are writing to the Bishop to ask for his input and will be writing to each member of the congregation in the next wee while to inform them of the situation.
The vestry would very much appreciate your prayer support at this time as we look to God for direction and guidance.

Garden of Eden Fruit Kebabs

The Sunday Squad started the summer off with a bang by making Garden of Eden fruit kebabs. There was chopping and peeling to be done and then everyone helped to skewer the fruit on to the kebab sticks. There was an outcry, however, when it was revealed that we were to have the fruit kebabs instead of our traditional toast after the service. The matter was readily rectified though with a quick trip up to the rectory for a loaf!! After all.. it's aye been!!!!

Registry of Gifts

You will have found a small purple insert in your monthly mag this week. This is a Registry of Gifts both offered and required by members of the congregation. Please have a look at the Registry and see if there is anything you can take up or fulfill.

The Registry offers a great opportunity for fellowship and is an easy way to boost church funds. Everyone who takes up a service/gift/opportunity from the Registry will be given a gift aid envelope to make a donation to church funds if they wish.

Sowing the Seeds of Faith

Today’s Sunday Squad theme was Sowing the Seeds of Faith. Duncan told the children the story of Johnny Appleseed, an American missionary who travelled the farm-lands of America, telling stories, teaching the gospel and planting apple trees with the seeds he collected from cider mills. His dream was for a land where no-one would go hungry.

This story reminds us of the parable that God's love is like an orchard, and that we should sow our own seeds of Hope, Peace, Love, and Joy.

The children brought this message to life by creating a fantastic poster with a variety of seeds - pumpkin seeds, sesame seeds, sunflower seeds, you name it! The pomegranate seeds were particularly tasty. Yum..!

Covenant Sunday

Last Sunday was Covenant Sunday in St Peter's and the Sunday Squad took part in the preceedings in their own unique way! They found all 11 pieces if this huge jigsaw of St Peter's keys which they then made up with very little adult input... most impressive!! The keys symbolised our church and Duncan showed them how the keys were only complete when all the pieces were fitted together. This showed the children how we are all an integral part of God's family and equally important whether we are 1 week old or 100 years old! The children then cut out and stuck on the pledges of help and support given by the congregation to remind us that we can all help other members of God's family.

"Outsider's" view of a Vestry Meeting

Last night - 14th May - I attended the "open" vesrty meting. Surpisingly interesting!

The issue that interested me most was the possibility of building on our success at fundraising with "Soup 'n' Pud" events. It was mooted that these might be more regular, perhaps every fortnight or even every week. People will always come up for a good meal and these events are always well supported by people outwith the congregation as well as church members and there is always at least one new face.

St Peter's reaches out to the community in a good, friendly and sociable way at a "Soup 'n' Pud" lunch.

In order to expand the service we would need a bigger list of helpers - both active serving teams and those who are willing to make soups and/or puds but can't actively help out during the setting up, serving, washing-up and clearing away. It would probably need a co-ordinator to hold all the threads together. If you are interested get in touch with me on the blog or on 01896 751694.

There were a lot of other interesting items on the agenda but this is the one that caught my attention and there are other, better informed folk who are members of the vestry who are involved with those.

Rebecca's Coffee Evening

I went to Rebecca Wade's coffee evening with Rosemary last Tuesday (12th May). What wonderful views from her house. Georgia, Badger and Patch provided the entertainment and I think that Georgia lent one of her Pingu videos to Karen!

Three types of cake were on offer and I sampled the chocolate dots (being a chocoholic!) and a wonderfully sticky piece of lemon cake. I am sure that the third - gingerbread was just as tastey.

It was a lovley social gathering and in such a good cause too.

ACAT letter writing 29th April

On the evening of Wednesday 29th April six of us, Tony, Helen, Joyce, Nancy, Rosemary and I met in the hall to write letters on behalf of prisoners in various countries.

We do this every couple of months after Rosemary has received the latest mailing from ACAT.

ACAT is an organisation called Action by Christians Against Torture and as well as writing the letters we pray for those mentioned in the appeals. We usually write two letters each and we all sign all of them. It would be possible to e-mail some but this loses the personal touch of the handwriting of a group of people.

Occasionally we get replies - the last one was in Russian! ACAT UK translated it for us. And we sometimes get letters from prisoners who have been freed. These letters tell how important our letters are as conditions improved after some were received and the people always had hope when they knew that others in many countries were praying for them.

The letters are sent to their Governments and copies go to Embassies or High Commissions in London. We are also asked to write to our MPs about people who are British citizens or have Right of Abode here - Guantanamo prisoners for example.

New letter writers are always welcome - just let Rosemary know that you are interested.

Christian Aid Service

This is Dr Dorothy Adeosun with Rosie, Freya and Georgia from the Sunday Squad. Dorothy came to talk to this morning about how her church in Nigeria helps others' in the community. She told us of the medical outreach work which is being done, the clothing which is donated and given to those in need and the churches recent project to secure clean water for a rural village by sinking a bore hole. Dorothy also highlighted the problem of infant malnutrition and how the church helps to combat this by encouraging local farmers to grow beans as cheap source of protein for their families. It was very interesting to hear about God's love working on the other side of the world and was insight into how much we could gain from having a companion link with a church in Africa. The congregation were told that this is something which will be discussed at the Open Vestry meeting on Thursday evening in the Rectory at 7.30pm.

The children at the Sunday Squad did their bit for Christian Aid by making cheese scones and chocolate krispy cakes and selling them to the rest of the congregation. The home baking was a hugh success, with everything being sold within 10 mins and £20 being raised!!! A big thank you to Oscar, Rosie, Freya, Georgia, Jessica and Sean for their hard work!!!!

Christian Aid Soup and Pud lunch

The Soup and Pud lunch is something of a St Peters staple and yesterday was used to raise money for Christian Aid. Pictured are the kitchen staff: Rosemary, Susan, Fiona and Karen who worked hard in the litchen to ensure all the soups and puds were at 'the pass' in time!! Thanks also go to Tony on the door and to Duncan, Helen and Richard the serving staff. Thanks to all their hard work and to the generosity of those who came £200 was raised for this great charity.

Christian Aid Week

Christian Aid week will run from 10th -16th May 2009 and is Britain's longest running fundraising week. It was launched in 1957 and last year raised £14.7 million to fund work in some of the world's poorest communities.

Our Christian Aid programme of events is as follows;

As you can see there are a variety of events taking place as well as door to door collecting and collecting at Asda, so please remember the work of Christian Aid and try to support this valuable charity if you can.

Cerys Robertson's Baptism

This is Cerys Darcy Robertson being baptised by Duncan with her Mum and Dad looking on. As always she was very well behaved and managed to sleep through the whole thing! A big thank you to all Cerys's family and friends who turned out to witness her special day, we welcome her into the family of God and hope she has many happy years at St Peter's.

It's at these times, when the sun is shining and the church is full of people all there to celebrate a great family event, that you realise how special God's love for us is.

The Hermitage Ensemble

Tonight saw the Hermitage Ensemble perform at St Peter's. It was a stunning performance of unaccompanied male voices. They sang a mixture of Russian orthodox and folk songs and even a Beatles number at the end! As you can see they received a standing ovation from the assembled masses!

100 Club

This month's 100 Club winner is Ruth Dawson's daughter Kathleen Edmond.
Ruth was a member of St Peter's many years ago but has kept on her 100 club numbers for herself and her daughter Kathleen. By sheer coincidence Ruth was up visiting for a few days and was in church this morning so was able to pick up her daughter's winnings!!!
Congratulations go to Kathleen and a big thank you to Ruth as she's saved us the postage!!!

Well today saw the unofficial launch of the blog! Having realised I had told the congregation we were thinking of starting one I then forgot to tell them that it was up and running!

Spring Fayre

Well, yesterday saw the annual St Peter's spring fayre go off without a hitch. There were plenty of customers and a huge variety of goods on offer. As always, the limitless home baking and endless refills offered for afternoon tea went down a storm as did the face painting - with both adults and children taking part! A total of £541 was rasied with more to come in from the left over home baking that was sold today after church (you can't beat 2 day old scones and cake!). A massive thanks to everyone who helped, donated or came along to buy what was on offer.

The Hermitage Ensemble

The Hermitage Ensemble are a Russian male voice choir from St Petersburg who are coming to perform in St Peter's on Sunday 26th April at 6.30pm. They perform a variety of spiritual and folk songs unaccompanied and are well worth hearing! Tickets are £8 / £6 concessions.

Following on from the success of the concerts which St Peter's has hosted in the past we will soon be launching our concert programme for 2009/2010. Watch this space for further details...

Church Floor

Easter Monday saw the start of the resealing of the church floor... a big job which required lots of helpers! The floor was probably due to be done in the next wee while anyway but was fast tracked due to the permanent marker which managed to indelibly stain the floor following the Christmas Messy church event!!! Interestingly it was an adult ( who shall remain nameless!) rather than a child who perpetrated the graffiti! Here's Rhuaridh and John sanding with the unique 'sanding brooms' ( creating by Duncan - patent pending!) and what looks like snow is actually the large amount of dust they were creating!!

Easter Sunday

I just wanted to add a photo of the sunday squad on Easter Sunday. It was the last Sunday for two of our Sunday Squad families; The Phillips and The Allisons. We had a great service which included adding everlasting dafs to our grass cross on the lawn ( the crocuses now come up about a month before Easter which is very annoying!) and decorating the Easter tomb at the altar. The kids managed to eat a massive choclate egg in about 3 seconds flat and found all the hidden eggs in the garden - no surprises there then! All the best to Kate, Alex, Zoe and Casey and Helen, Anthony, Mary, Owen and Sarah from everyone at St P's, we will miss you all and hope to keep in touch until we meet again.

SPRING FAYRE

Just a wee reminder that the Spring Fayre is this Saturday 18th April 2-4pm at St Peter's Church, Abbotsford Road... there are still some car boot spaces left if anyone is interested? Lots of stalls and the best afternoon teas in Gala on offer!!! Look forward to seeing you there :)

Easter flowers

As a new member of St Peter's from January of this year, this was the first time I have helped with the flowers for Easter Day.

It was a very enjoyable Saturday morning, arranging flowers in various baskets and vases. There were flowers everywhere; on windowsills, shelves, on the font, at the door and around the pillars. We used mostly daffodils with greenery and also a beautiful vase of lilies at the altar .

It was a glorious Easter Sunday morning and even more so to go into church and see such a wonderful sight and knowing that I had helped, with everybody on Saturday morning, to make it so, what a pleasure .

Palm crosses

On the evening of Sunday 29th of March a group of about seven met in the church hall to make palm crosses for Palm Sunday. In previous years the late Ann Brown had always made them - another of the jobs that no one knew needed to be done until after her death. Now about 3 people fill the
gaps. A few of us had done this last year but I must admit I had not
retained the instructions. Fortunately Richard had printed an
illustrated guide for us to follow. This still managed to flumox most of
us even after Richard gave us one to one tuition! Once the nack of
folding the two strips of golden palm in the correct order had been mastered the conversation flowed and the basket filled up with finished
crosses. It was a pleasant hour spent in useful fellowship and I look
forward to doing them again next Easter.
